Musicology:
A pencil and ink score of the Sonatensatz was discovered in 1965. An early work, it could have been intended as part of a three movement piece, which may have included the Satz fur Klavier in c minor and an untitled piece in f minor: an early sketch of the Sonatensatz was found at the end of the f minor piece, on the same page, suggesting—according to Hans Moldenhauer—that they might belong together, despite (or perhaps because of?) their differences in mood and character. The Sonatensatz, like the Satz fur Klavier, has ³c² as its tonal centre, and was probably written in 1906 or before, according to Webern¹s diary, which notes that, around the time of Schoenberg¹s Chamber Symphony, he was working on a piano piece in c. The work is only barely tonal, using what Webern describes as ³suspended tonality,² with quickly passing keys and a vague tonal centre.
