Musicology:
This work is marked by persuasive romantic expressivity and lively instrumental writing that is frequently imitative. The opening Allegro begins in a somewhat dramatic mood with each instrument entering in turn. Leading melodies are frequently found in the middle of very active textures that often progress motivically. A figure in repeated-note triplets leads to the eloquently singing second theme.

String Quartet No.8 in E, B.57, Op.80Key: E
Year: 1876
Genre: String Quartet
Pr. Instrument: String Quartet
- 1.Allegro
- 2.Andante con moto
- 3.Allegro scherzando
- 4.Finale: Allegro con brio
The subsequent Andante con moto begins plaintively, and moves on to treat its material in a manner that is easy to follow. The first theme is an expressive affair given out over an animated chordal accompaniment and an important pizzicato counterline on the cello, and the second has a somewhat hymnal feel to it. The forward motion frequently starts and stops, and the mood is consistent throughout.
The allegro scherzando is an easygoing if rhythmically tricky scherzo-type movement that often has the feel of elegant dancing motion. The trio is more vigorous and metrically predictable.
Repeated-note triplets in the violins and a pizzicato line in the cello start out the Allegro con brio finale as the viola gives out the opening melody. The mood is still somewhat concerned, and evolves toward an ecstatically triumphant ending.
