Musicology:
One of Mozart's earliest published compositions, this is the first work in a group of six sonatas published in London in January 1765 that were dedicated to the English Queen. Curiously, although these pieces are regarded as genuine violin sonatas, they were issued under the title of "Six Sonatas for Harpsichord, which may be played with the accompaniment of Violin or Transverse Flute." As violinist and historian Abram Loft points out, "In short, these are keyboard sonatas with the distinctive secondary support of the violin." Yet some early editions also have an optional cello part that duplicates the piano's bass line. The sonata has three movements and is predominately cast in the Style galant idiom in vogue at the time. The central slow movement is the most extended, but the entire work lasts under ten minutes in all. While never revealing the structural grandeur of Mozart's mature works, K. 10 is nevertheless a fascinating waymarker in the composer's developmental process. -
