Schubert wrote his Fantasy in C in 1822. The name Wandererfantaisie derives from the fact that the Adagio is a set of variations on his song of that name. Liszt arranged it for piano and orchestra circa 1850. His transcription is a faithful one, since he only added a cadenza before the transition to the second theme. The work is a sonata in four uninterrupted movements: Allegro con fuoco ma non troppo, Adagio, Presto, and Allegro.
