Musicology:
This robust song for tenor and piano accompaniment has words by an anonymous poet for its text. The story is that of a romantic dalliance on the road to the Yarmouth Fair - "She didn't say 'yes' and she didn't say 'no', And the birds they sang 'Heigh ho, heigh ho !' ". As the song progresses, and the birds sing everything from "Good day!", "Go on!", "Hullo!", "Hurray!" to "Goodbye, goodbye!", the piano chords get more and more ambitious with added higher harmonics and clusters giving a wild, raucous effect. -
