Musicology (work in progress):
This is one of the most popular Russian folk songs, a colorful creation flavored with a festive peasant spirit and a sense of both celebration and nostalgia. Kalinka (Little Snowfall) is often performed by a choral ensemble with a soloist singing certain parts, but it can also be sung by a lone vocalist. There are numerous arrangements of it, both vocal and instrumental, the latter type often serving as accompaniment for lively folk dances. Performances of the folk song may vary in treatment, of course, but most open with the chorus (or soloist) singing a slower introductory section, after which they introduce the exotic, rhythmic main theme, which unhurriedly begins but gradually gains momentum until the tempo is racing, with hands clapping, feet stomping, and the listener breathless trying to keep up with the sonic frenzy. This main section alternates with a somewhat sentimental, mellow theme of slower pacing. The main material returns twice more, each time working up to a frantic, festive celebration. The song lasts from three to four minutes, and its colorful ethnic flavors will appeal strongly to folk and Russian music enthusiasts. -
