  • Keyboard Sonata in E, Hob.XVI:22, Op.13, No.2 (No.37)
    Key: E
    Year: 1773
    Genre: Sonata
    Pr. Instrument: Piano
    • 1.Allegro moderato
    • 2.Andante
    • 3.Finale: Tempo di minuetto

The music of the brilliantly accomplished young composer begins with the sonantas of this set to give way to more inward music. Self-communing is evident as well as the need for the subtle and the under-stated.

A broad chord alternates several times with the opening theme. It begins a journey through a maze of ideas that play off each other. The opening treatment appears at the end but the chord is sometimes unison and sometimes arpeggiated. The forces gather and move firmly to a sunny but simple close. The middle movement is gentle and with its elegant dance-like rhythm prepares the listener for the minuet finale. The more formal music of the last movement has a brief trio with a more abrupt contour but the music relapses to that of a gentle dance. The vigorous figure returns and an almost contrapuntal dialogue carries the work to a quietly joyous conclusion.
