Musicology:
Guitarist Andrés Segovia received a miniature musical portrait of himself from Albert Roussel in the two-and-a-half-minute Segovia, Op. 29. It's a gentle, jovial piece, a blithe departure from Roussel's sterner manner of the period. The nearly identical outer sections employ a frankly Spanish melodic style, over an ostinato rhythm that sounds Iberian rather than motoric. Roussel here tempers his customary harshness by eschewing chordal writing, keeping everything bright and linear. The central section is both playful and superficially ominous, but obviously not ominous enough to challenge this composition's essentially sunny mood. -
