Tosti was a master of creating a lush, sensual effect within the genre of

the salon song. This gracefully flowing composition combines a warm,

lyrical accompaniment with the arching phrases of the vocal line, very

deftly ornamented to complete the tone of delicate sensuality and, ultimately,

a sweet resignation. The melody is, like many of Tosti's other works,

such as Malia or Chanson de l'adieu, instantly memorable and pleasantly

rich.

The lover recounts a dream in which "you were on your knees, like a saint

who prays to the Lord, you looked deep into my eyes, your glance was

brilliant with love." The description of the dream continues, with the lover

yielding to the force of "tempting desire, " but then awakening as the dream

vanishes.
