Keyboard Sonata in D, Hob.XVI:51 (No.61)Key: D
Genre: Sonata
Pr. Instrument: Keyboard
- 1.Andante
- 2.Finale: Presto
This is the second of three sonatas dedicated to Therese Jansen and a little perfunctory with its two rather than three movements and a length of little more than five minutes. Rosemary Hughes (Haydn) describes it with approval as two fiery movements that show the core of Haydn within Beethoven.
The first movement has a broken chord opening and a theme that is sprightly and gentle. It moves forward with a proud voice. Dialogue alternates with melody and accompaniment. The opening theme is repeated at each of the three sections of this movement. The development is surefooted with graceful and unexpected turns of direction. The movement bubbles to a surprisingly quiet close. The closing movement, a movement with offbeat dynamic accents, opens with a gathering of forces from great distances. It then flows quickly forward with clear purpose. There is a brief echo passage and an abrupt end.
