This is the third part of "Trionfi," a trilogy of choral and vocal works celebrating love, also including the very popular Carmina Burana and Catulli Carmina. Like the first, it is for full orchestra in addition to the chorus and solo voices. This one celebrates the purity and passion of conjugal love, depicting a wedding ceremony before Aphrodite and extolling the estate of matrimony. Unlike the dalliance and revelry of Carmina Burana or the rather cynical disapproving description of carnal love which is the burden of Catulli Carmina, this composition is more high-toned than the others, with a more flexible and more extended use of harmonies. Even so, the main emphasis is still on melody, rhythm, and orchestral color, all intended to serve the words of the texts (which come from Catullus, Sappho, and Euripides). The pounding rhythms and simple melodies which predominate are contrasted with florid, decorated lyrical phrases for the bride and bridegroom.
