The first movement of String Quartet Op. 2, No. 6, is an adagio, unusual for Haydn, unusual for 1762. Despite its opus number, it is an early quartet, perhaps only his second. The symmetry is simple, but not simplistic. The opening theme has four variations and in each variation the bass and harmonic structure remains constant. There is much melodic decoration. Haydn achieves a nice contrast by varying the dynamics of the different types of imitative melodic figures. The central theme reappears at the head of the last variation, a musical tactic that Haydn used extensively. The first minuet also uses similar devices, namely the variation, but in different keys. Modest as it is, the minuet marks the beginnings of Haydn's contrapuntal forays. In the presto there is a lively scherzo, not quite one to rival Beethoven's, but enough to dislodge the tightest wig. The second theme of the second minuet provides an eerie dip into the minor key, but doesn't stay there long. This is not the Sturm und Drang period yet! The closing presto does not have quite the same abandon as the first movement, but it suffices.
