This previously unpublished song was found in collected Barber documents by John Browning, the pianist who was searching for worthy unpublished songs for his 1994 Deutsche Grammophon collection of Barber songs with Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson. Like most of the songs written during his Curtis Institute and early independent years, it was probably first performed by the composer, or possibly by Rose Bampton. The text is a translation by John Addinton Symonds from a Greek text of Meleager. It is a poem that pictures Love as a wind that pushes the lover to his beloved's door. The accompaniment is fast and whirling; the setting is direct and the melody has a pictorial quality of hanging on to one note, like the keening of the wind. The song is very brief, but is a superior work that makes a fine impression.
