A five-note scale figure, in both rising and falling forms, obsesses this dark and haunting song, The accompaniment is almost entirely consumed by it, and it enters the vocal line as a melismatic figuration. The text, by W.H. Davies, presents a stark, grim nocturnal image of need and suffering; we understand the said five-note figure to represent shuddering or shivering. Barber's setting is stark, powerful, and affecting. It is one of a set of songs once left unknown in Barber's Library of Congress papers but published when selected by John Browning, Cheryl Studer, and Thomas Hampson for their comprehensive recording of Barber songs.
