Of That So Sweet ImprisonmentYear: 1935
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Voice
This is the first of several settings by Samuel Barber by that most musical of novelists, James Joyce. The text comes from Joyce's collection called "Chamber Music." It is a love song whose predominant image is the mutal imprisonment of a pair of lovers. The melody is rich, with subtle harmonies and a fluid freedom of modulation, very sensitive to the text. It is one of a group of songs which were discovered in Barber's papers at the Library of Congress in preparation for a Deutsche Grammophon recording of complete Barber songs. It was probably first performed by the composer himself.
