Strings in the Earth and AirYear: 1935
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Voice
Barber frequently made songs from writings by James Joyce. Like several others written around this time, this one is drawn from Joyce's collection called "Chamber Music." It is a very brief, very touching, and quite lovely song. The predominant musical figuration, a simple and smooth scale figure, perhaps is symbolic of the "strings" which the poem says make the music of air and nature, when strummed by Love. This is one of several songs that were not published until 1994, when discovered in the Library of Congress in preparation for a compact disc recording of collected Barber songs.
