Barber frequently turned to the poetry of James Joyce in selecting song texts. This is one that remained virtually unknown until a deliberate effort in 1994 to assess some of the unpublished manuscripts in the composer's papers collected in the Library of Congress yielded ten fresh songs, composed over a twelve year period of Barber's youth and early maturity. The text, from Joyce's "Chamber Music, " is a languid depiction of a pair of lovers lying of a noontime in the darkness of a pine forest. The setting is a remarkable use of scale patterns, for almost everything in the song, both in the part for low voice and for piano, is a scale, usually lazily rising.
