    • 1.The Queen's Face on the Summery Coin
    • 2.Monks and Raisins

This work came right after Barber's Second Essay for orchestra, but as this was a transitional moment in Barber's musical language - the Second Symphony would soon follow -, there seems not to be any stylistic connection with the former piece. The set comprises two songs. The first, "The Queen's face on the summery coin" is a setting of a text by Robert Horan. Composed in 1942, it is an intriguing song with a marked change of rhythm in the middle. The second, "Monks and Raisins", sets a poem of J. GarcĂa Villa. Composed in 1943, it has a faster tempo than the previous song but stylistically, it is comparably elusive.
