  • Nuvoletta, Op.25 (text by Joyce)
    Year: 1947
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
    Pr. Instrument: Voice

This strange song was written in 1947. It is a setting of a fragment from James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake". Barber has called it "a slightly ironic song", and mentioned it includes quotes from Wagner's "Tristan". It opens as a light-hearted waltz. Two minutes later, the piano dancing slows down almost to a halt, and the voice intones a mock chant. What follows is a pensive section with extensive vocalizations a capella. Suddenly, the waltz resumes for the last stanza, starting with "Nuvoletta reflected for the last time in her little long life...".
