Even though Tchaikovsky is pretty likely to head any list of the world's most popular composers, there are neglected works, including some which baffle this commentator by not having become well-known. This Concert Fantasy (or "Concert Fantasia") is one of them, for it is a fine and imaginative work that deserves much wider currency than it usually receives.
In length, if not structure, this two-movement work is the equivalent of a full-scale piano concerto. What makes it unusual is the form of the first movement ("Quasi Rondo"), which consists of nearly identical opening and closing sections for orchestra and piano which flank a large central contrasting section for piano alone.
The second movement, named "Contrasts" by the composer, ingeniously combines the functions ofa slow movement with a fast movement, ultimately bringing back the main theme of the first movement at the very conclusion.
This rather original form encloses Tcahikovsky's typical lush melodic gift; the work should be considered by program-builders when looking for something novel yet sure to please,
