Although Hanson's Second Symphony, with its broad, Romantic theme, is the most popular, this writer would recommend the Third Symphony above it. It is a four movement work, broad in scope. At 40 minutes in length, it is the most originally planned and, to this writer, the most satisfying of Hanson's symphonies. It is full of dramatic ideas. These fit together to create a dramatic emotional progression, just like a great symphony is supposed to do. Like all of Hanson's music, the style is a slight advancement of the typical Romantic music style, with some 20th century nervousness in rhythms, but nothing that would be uncomfortable to listeners who accept Strauss or Ravel.
