Sainte (song)Year: 1896
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instruments: Voice & Piano
"Sainte" was inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé's poem "Sainte Cécile jouant sur l'aile d'un chérubin" ("Saint Cecilia Playing on the Wing of a Cherub"). It marked Ravel's first encounter with the poet who would be more famously honored in the "Trois Poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé" of 1913. The composer's setting captures the hushed, contemplative mood by means of a lyrical vocal line extends over a limited range, accompanied by slow-moving, unresolved seventh and ninth chords. Beyond one brief crescendo, the dynamics do not exceed piano, and the song ends somewhat mysteriously on an unresolved ninth chord. "Sainte" remained it Ravel's portfolio until 1907, when it was published by Durand.
