Musicology:
Written in 1933, this is the last piano composition by Roussel. As was his habit with his piano pieces, the dedication was to the premiere performer, in this case Robert Casadesus. Although it is lamentable that so much fine music is unheard in the concert hall, it is not Casadesus' fault, since he was also a composer and was given little opportunity to program his own works, much less those of his friends. The first piece, Allegro con brio, has highly charged rhythms and energetic lines that don't quite add up to melodies. The second movement is a gracious waltz, with a slightly obsessive quality. The third piece is marked Allegro con spirito. It is an exuberant movement with occasional rhythmic catches. The middle section is more lyrical and suave. -
