being taken from some specific dramatic situation, though it, like many
of De Curtis' songs, is written in the Neapolitan dialect. The title
translates as "Without anybody, " and the song dwells on the singer's loss
and loneliness.
The opening instrumental music is rich and full, but softens as the vocal
line starts. The two verses act as introductions for the refrain, which
has the main melodic lines of the song, and gives it its title, "Che
mala sciorta, ahime. Sulo senza nisciuno e tu, tu morta, si, pe me! Tu
morta, si, pe me!" (What a terrible fate! Alone without anybody,
and you, you are dead, yes, for me! You are dead, yes, for me!")
In the first verse, the singer describes the evening and his solitude,
and then sings the refrain. In the next verse, he wonders where his
beloved is, whether she is happy or sad, if she ever weeks, if she shares
his torment. The refrain repeats, and then after a long instrumental
part, the last line repeats, "You are dead, yes, for me!"
