Bach wrote his festive Cantata No. 120 "Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille" (God, One Praises You in the Temple) (BWV 120) for the installation of a new city council in Leipzig in either 1728 or 1729. It sets a line from Psalm 65:2 for the opening movement, a section of Martin Luther's Deutsches Te Deum for the closing movement, and poems by Picander for the middle movements. The cantata is scored for alto, bass, soprano and tenor soloists, chorus, a pair of oboe d'amore, strings, and basso continuo, plus three trumpets and tympani for the chorale movements. "Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille" is in D major, but with its first movements in the dominant of A major, its second and sixth movements in the tonic of D major, its third movement in the relative minor of B minor, its fourth in the subdominant of G major, and its fifth in the mediant of F sharp minor. The first movement is a delicate aria in 6/8 time for alto soloist, strings, obbligato oboe d'amore, and continuo. The second is a massively celebratory choral fantasia for chorus and full orchestra including trumpets and drums. The third is a secco recitative for bass soloist and continuo and the fourth is an da capo aria in gentle 6/8 time for soprano soloist and concertante solo violin accompanied by strings and continuo. The fifth is a solemn recitative for tenor soloist accompanied by discrete strings and continuo. "Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille" concludes with a harmonization of Luther's Te Deum for chorus and full orchestra colla parte. -
