The title of this piece, written between 1976 and 1984, refers to the Waters of Babylon passage in Psalm 137, a quote of which precedes the score. However, it is not a setting of the words. The work is scored for four solo voices - soprano, counter-tenor, tenor, and baritone - and organ, but the voices vocalize without words. The tenor opens with a wailing monody which then passes to the soprano and then to the baritone. Then two, three or all four voices sing together the undulating melody, while the organ plays pedal notes or triads. The music goes on for six minutes, with fluctuating intensity, and then suddenly stops.
