Stabat Mater, for soprano, alto, tenor, violin, viola, and celloYear: 1985
Genre: Other Choral
Pr. Instruments: Soprano & Alto
This 1985 setting of the traditional text was commissioned by the Alban Berg Foundation. It is scored for three high voices - soprano, counter-tenor and tenor - with the accompaniment of violin, viola and cello. The 25-minute work begins with an introduction by the string trio that begins pianissimo in the high regions and gradually descends in pitch while growing in intensity. The voices join in a polyphonic vocalise and then fell silent while the strings continue their downward movement. The voices enter again to begin the text proper, which develops along twenty minutes, with dance-like interpolations of the string trio. At the end, the string trio is left alone to fade quietly into nothingness.
