This is a relatively subdued piece by Joplin, lively and bright, but not as driven and fast paced as many of his other ragtime piano pieces. That said, it is still a colorful, vigorous effort, its spirit not dampened by its relatively moderate pacing. Like so many of his works, it has a simplicity of expression, too, but also an undercurrent of complexity. The simplicity comes with the catchy thematic material and foot-tapping rhythms, the complexity with the structural subtleties, how themes transform and spawn variants as the piece proceeds. The main theme is jovial but exhibits a slightly stiff character at the outset. It gradually grows lighter and more festive as it transforms. It also takes on a certain vehemence in its rhythmic manner, turning brighter and more celebratory even though the sense of cheer becomes almost obsessive near the end, with chords ringing their insistent rhythms and repetitive thematic bits in the upper register until, as if suddenly drained, the music abruptly ends. Lasting about four minutes, this charming piece will appeal to Joplin and ragtime music aficionados.
