Composed for the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, which fell on December 27, 1724, Bach's Cantata No. 133 "Ich freue mich in dir" (My Joy Is All in Thee) (BWV 133) sets a chorale hymn by Kaspar Ziegler from 1697 as its outer movements and an anonymous paraphrase of the hymn's inner verses for its central movements. The cantata is scored for tenor, soprano and bass soloists, chorus, a pair of oboe d'amore, strings, and basso continuo, with a solo trumpet doubling the choral sopranos in the opening and closing movements. "Ich freue mich in dir" is overwhelmingly cast in celebratory D major with its first, third, fifth, and sixth movements in the tonic; its second movement in the major dominant of A major; and its fourth in the relative minor of B minor. The first movement is a brilliant choral fantasia with the winds doubling the strings and the chorus interjecting lines of Ziegler's chorale. The second is a sprightly aria in the form of a trio sonata for alto soloist, a pair of oboe d'amore, and striding continuo. The third is a brief but powerful secco recitative for tenor soloist and continuo. The fourth, and the heart of the cantata, is a da capo aria for ardent soprano soloist, strings, and continuo. The fifth is a very brief but very emotional secco recitative for bass soloist and continuo. "Ich freue mich in dir" concludes with a harmonization of Ziegler's chorale for chorus and full orchestra colla parte, with the solo trumpet doubling the sopranos.
