A four-minute gem of masterful orchestration, Emmanuel Chabrier's Habañera (1888) hearkens to the composer's earlier masterpiece, the lusty orchestral rhapsody España (1883), albeit in gentler terms. The Habañera, arranged from an 1885 piano work of the same name, is similarly linear and essentially free-form, and contains evident Spanish influences in its rhythmic and melodic language. The work unfolds as a sort of stately dance, beginning and ending peacefully.
