Musicology (work in progress):
Written in 1993, this work is scored for string orchestra. Low, brooding strings open the work with slow moving melodies that produce odd difference or beating tones at the beginning. The polyphony gradually becomes more complex, and suddenly the music resolves on a consonant chord recalling medieval music gestures. The harmony begins again in the low registers but again gradually opens up as more highs are added, with many inner complex, singing embellishments and surprisingly brilliant harmonies full of light and tenderness. The embellishments metamorphosize into whirling patterns that become intense, then very gradually decelerate and close the work in a gentle, sustained chord. Another surprising use of tonality and older music gestures in a unique contemporary manner. -
