Musicology (work in progress):
Written in 1995, this work is scored for three flutes, campanelli, strings and live electronics. The live electronics primarily modulate the flutes by delay (multiple echoes) and by slow pitch transposition which gives the sensation of them spreading into "chromatic clouds, " especially at the desolate, icy northern soundscape of the beginning. The strings play many rhythmic patterns that create a kind of classic feeling, and this leads directly into the tiny bells (campanelli) that give another more active, lively version of colliding ice crystals. Electronic delays are also employed on the bell sounds, a cascade joined by sliding strings. The music becomes more wintry with wind harmonics and sustained strings at the conclusion. -
