Bon jour mon coeur (a4)Year: 1564
Genre: Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Chorus/Choir
This song, to a text by Ronsard, displays one of Lassus' greatest talents—taking a text that
would appear almost monotonous at first glance, and by masterly phrasing and working with strict
attention to the text, makes it a strong, cohesive, compelling composition. Another work
in which he does this particularly well is his chanson Beau le cristal.
Ronsard's text translates simply, "Good day, my heart, good day, my sweet life, good day,
my eye, good day, my sweetheart. Ah, good day, my completely beautiful one, my darling, my love,
my sweet springtime, my sweet just-bloomed flower, my sweet pleasure, my sweet dove, my
sparrow, my gracious turtledove, good day, my sweet rebel." Lassus, with very natural
phrases and graceful, slight ornamentation, and a very light touch, makes this a charming
little composition.
