Despite the position of these Variations in the middle of Beethoven's Opus, they lack much of the characteristic urgency found in many of his compositions from the same time. Like many of Beethoven's early works, the slow, lyrical portions hint at the deep, aggressive emotion more prevalent in some of his later pieces, while the faster-tempoed variations are fairly light and clinical. Beethoven's weighty, rhythmic invention, however, is certainly riskier than the music of Haydn or Mozart and serves to set his music apart in the end.
