Musicology:
Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score for William Keighley's 1937 adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper is lavish and robust. The music is particularly apposite for a "children's" film, especially the almost Mahlerian theme that dominates the extended closing titles. Korngold used the music of Thomas Tallis and his contemporaries as the basis for much of the atmospheric music in the elaborate coronation scene, which represents the climax of both movie and score. The composer later resued parts of the score, including the rhapsodic main theme, in his Violin Concerto (1947).
