Handel and his new librettist Giacomo Rossi attempted a change of style for the opera that followed Rinaldo. Il Pastor Fido is a simple pastoral with very little spectacle or visual display. The pastoral was not a popular genre in England, and did not have a history of success on the English stage; Il Pastor Fido was as big a failure as Rinaldo had been a success. The style of the opera was old and probably considered out-dated, but its revision in 1734 was better received, in part because the music is rather delightful.
