Musicology:
Written in 1990, this work was originally composed for solo cello. It had its American premiere in a performance by Kristine Reiko Cooper at the Mannes College of Music in New York. Like other works in minimalist and related genres, however, it lends itself to arrangement for other forces, and in 1999 it appeared on the Out of the Night disc released by the early music-oriented Taverner Consort (named after the Renaissance composer John Taverner, not believed to be related to Tavener) in a consort version. The disc paired Tavener's works with those of fellow Russian Orthodox composer Arvo Pärt. -
