Presto for Cello and Piano, JW 7/6Year: c.1910
Genre: Other Chamber
Pr. Instrument: Cello
Leos Janacek composed this single movement cello piece at about the same time he was writing a more substantial work for the same pair of instruments (Pohadka or Fairy Tale, 1910). This might have been a movement originally intended for that project, which already had enough fast music. This is a terse, exciting and difficult two-minute piece. Its main motive is a memorable one that Janacek also used later in the wind sextet Mladi." The style is well on the way to Janacek's mature last phase, notable for its use of short melodies and rapid-fire musical development. It is a rapid-fire and invigorating piece.
