Respighi delighted in painting a vivid mood and visual image with his compositions, and this song is one of his most charming efforts. The voice and accompaniment act as partners here, with the singer acting as an observer, and the accompaniment depicting the rainfall.

The song opens with droplets spattering down in a summer storm, relieving the steady heat. These droplets expand to gusts of rain, complete with little flashes of summer lightning, as the singer watches the parched ground and plants appear to take on new life. In phrases shaped almost like sighs of relief or taking deep breaths of the cooled air, the singer contemplates the refreshed greenery. The song ends with the accompaniment imitating the last few droplets of the shower, brushing through the singer's hair.
