Musicology:
This song, whose title translates as "The Poor Man, " is set to a poem by S. Manfredo Maggioni. In the first verse the speaker begs passersby for money. In the second verse he recounts his days of strength and youth as a soldier, and in the third he talks about his decline and bitterness as the land he's served has forgotten him. The first verse is reprised as fourth. The music features lyrically plaintive lines in the major mode throughout. The second verse is straightforwardly diatonic, whereas chromatic inflections heighten the expressivity of the others. -
