This is a short setting of a poem by Friedrich Rückert. The two main images in the poem are fragrance and tears, and it is set with a tender, minor feeling. The phrases are short but lyrical, and perfectly balance one another. The accompaniment in the piano is light, and also tender, for the poet speaks of his missing beloved, who has just passed by. The listener experiences the fleeting melody as it would the lingering fragrance in the air after she has passed.
