Schubert set Friedrich von Matthisson's Stimme der Liebe (Voice of Love) twice, first in May, 1815 (D. 187), and then again in April, 1816 (D. 418). Both versions set Matthisson's three verses strophically, that is, to exactly the same music for each verse. The first version of Stimme der Liebe is delightfully charming in an almost Mozartian way. Setting a ravishingly simple melody in lilting triple time over a piano accompaniment which is a little too fast and ardent to be considered a true minuet, Schubert's 1815 version is almost artlessly beautiful.
