Musicology:
Except for a few small details, Schubert's strophic setting of Friedrich Stolberg, Stolberg's Morgenlied (Morning Song) (D. 266) is traditional to the point of being conventional. The melody is a pretty little major-keyed tune which Haydn might have written. The harmonies travel not further afield than Dittersdorf's. The intertwining lines of the piano accompaniment could have come from a Mozart wind duet. While there are a few turns of melody which could have come from the apprentice Schubert, the only truly unconventional touch is the five-bar piano postlude. Otherwise, it seems that for Schubert in 1815, the morning rose in the eighteenth century. -
