Musicology:
Abendlied (Evening Song) (D. 276) of August 28, 1815, was not quite Schubert's first twilight song. It was preceded by Der Abend (The Sunset) (D. 108) and another Der Abend (D. 221). But this Abendlied is the best of the first three. Although a simple strophic song setting four verses by Friedrich Leopold Graf zu Stolberg-Stolberg (the author of the poem Auf dem Wasser zu singen which Schubert later set as D. 774), it is not without its moments of ingenuity— for example, the ascending phrase which accompanies the rising of the moon in the first verse. And, of course, it has one of Schubert's charming A major melodies which transfigure so many of Schubert's "God's in nature and all's right with the world" melodies. -
