Musicology:
Liane (D. 298) from October 1815 was Schubert's second of 47 settings of poems by his soon-to-be close friend and roommate, Johann Mayrhofer. It is an exquisitely wrought song of deep beauty. Set in broad C major in a "very slow" tempo, Liane is at once brilliantly composed and emotionally ecstatic, an intimate painting of two lovers anticipating their tryst. Over the course of its four verses, Schubert's music moves from an extended piano introduction to a recitative to an arioso to a full-fledged aria over rolling sextuplets in the piano to an extended piano postlude.
