Musicology:
Schubert's second song with the title Abendlied (Evening Song) (D. 382) is clearly derived from Mozart's Abendemfindung. The elegantly turned vocal melody, the graceful piano accompaniment, the charming strophic setting of the text by an unknown poet—all these elements are taken directly from Mozart's earlier song. This Abendlied does not rank as one of Schubert's more distinguished songs: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau does not even mention it in his Schubert's Songs, A Biographical Study, nor does even so endlessly enthusiastic a Schubertian as Graham Johnson grant it more than one paragraph in his exhaustive liner notes. -
