Der Entfernten, D.350Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Voice
Schubert's setting of Johann von Salis-Seewis' three-verse poem "Die Entfernten" (The Distant Beloved) from 1816 as a strophic song is as neat a Mozartian song as Schubert ever wrote. With its chaste melody, its lilting rhythm in 8/6, its E flat major tonality, and its slightly reserved but none-the-less heartfelt sentiments, Die Entfernten could come from Die Zauberflöte. But in its harmonies—its modulation to the subdominant at the opening and its illustration of the text through harmonic means—Die Entfernten is purest Schubert. While not the greatest of Schubert's settings of Salis-Seewis, Die Entfernten is nevertheless one of the more charming.
