Alinde, D.904, Op.81, No.1Year: 1827
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Voice
Schubert's setting of Johann Rochlitz's Alinde (D. 904) from January 1827 is one of his least complicated and most charming barcarolles. With a folk-like melody including a yodel at the chorus set over a mildly rocking piano accompaniment, Schubert's Alinde sets Rochlitz's eight verses as four pairs of strophes. Compared with more malevolent barcaroles like Das Fischermädchen and more transcendental barcaroles like Des Fischers Liebesgluck, Alinde is not a profound work. Nevertheless, its innocent delight more than compensates for its lack of depth.
