Schubert's songs. Schubert sets August von Schlegel's eight line verses in five four-bar with the last phase repeated the two final lines. With the addition of a four-bar introduction, the whole song is over in 24 brief bars. Nor are there any passages of stunning originality or breathtaking audacity in Wiedersehen; the melody is has the regularity of folk song sung over a almost strummed accompaniment from the piano. And yet Wiedersehen's very simplicity is its greatest virtue: when Schubert was in the mood, he could write songs which seem to have always existed and which have the comfort of instant recognition for the listener.
Although not one of Schubert's greatest songs, Wiedersehen is yet one of his most affecting.
