Musicology:
Choral Sum sigilum summi Patris is a conductus for two voices, which is attributed to the medieval French composer Perotinus (fl c.1200). erotinus, or 'Little Peter', was one of the most famed composer of the type of polyphony known as Organum. In addition to these works, he wrote clausulae and conducti. An unknown English student studying at the University of Paris in the late 13th century attributes Perotinus as the composer of Sum Sigilum. Called simply Anonymous 4, it is mainly through his writings that we know of the writers of organum and the Parisian school of Notre Dame. Conducti were a musical form gaining popularity during Perotinus' lifetime and could be either polyphonic or monophonic. In theme, they ranged from being almost Latin secular songs, commenting on topical themes, celebrating coronations, attacking sin and so forth to being considered tropes, using semi-religious themes and sometimes being unofficial additions to the mass, as in this case. -
